Phase 3: Faculty Collaborations
Faculty Workgroup Meeting - May 20-23, 2019
The MSOE Center for BioMolecular Modeling will be hosting a CREST Summer Faculty Workgroup Meeting in Milwaukee on May 20-23, 2019. The workgroup meeting will begin around noon on Monday and conclude around noon on Thursday to allow participants to travel to and from the meeting on these two days.
The goal of the gathering is to bring together a group of undergraduate molecular biosciences faculty to collaborate on developing student-centered, interactive instructional materials. We have found that a few days away from the normal routine, surrounded by like-minded folks, does wonders to stimulate the creative juices!
We are delighted to announce the topic for this year's exploration is the ribosome. Dr. Venki Ramakrishnan's recent book Gene Machine: The Race to Decipher the Secrets of the Ribosome is a great introduction to the topic. In addition, this year student CREST teams have been exploring the research of one of Ramakrishnan's former post-doctoral students, Dr. Christine Dunham of Emory University.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore one of the topics below in depth and work with CBM staff to develop instructional materials and classroom activities to bring these current research topics into their classrooms.
- How does the structure of the ribosome contribute to its function?
- What is the role of toxin-antitoxin interactions in the stress response?
- How does the mRNA move through the ribosome - one codon at a time?
- How are STOP codons read?
- How are stalled ribosomes rescued?
If you are interested in helping design and create better tools to teach any of these topics, consider joining us this spring!
Located six blocks from Lake Michigan in the heart of Milwaukee’s theater district, the CBM is a creative workspace with access to a variety of 3D printers, laser cutters and CBM staff who can help you develop your ideas.
We have a limited number of awards for travel and housing; if you have alternate sources of funding we encourage you to use them to allow a larger number of people to attend the meeting.
Applications are due by April 15.
We hope you will consider coming to “play” with us this summer!
