Science Olympiad Protein Modeling Event

The Science Olympiad is a rigorous, interscholastic competition of over 30 individual and team events covering the disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. The Science Olympiad mission is to improve student interest in science through competition and by emphasizing problem solving and understanding science concepts, through hands-on, minds-on constructivist learning.

To compete successfully in the Protein Modeling Event, you will:

  • learn basic principles of protein structure and function
  • learn to explore a protein structure using Jmol - a molecular visualization program
  • learn how to create a physical model of a specific protein using flexible modeling media (Mini-Toobers)

CBM has developed several resources to assist in training for the Protein Modeling Event.

The Protein Modeling Event is now listed as National Trial Event. If you are interested in offering the event in your state, please contact Shannon Colton for more information. The Protein Modeling Event was held at the 2009 National Tournament. For more information, please click here.

We are very excited to offer the materials for the 2010 Protein Modeling event at no cost to the states participating in the event. This was made possible through funding from an HHMI Precollege Science Education award and an award from Life Technologies, a provider of innovative life science solutions. Each team will be provided one kit. Teams interested in purchasing additional materials should contact 3D Molecular Designs (414-774-6562; dianeherman3dmd@wi.rr.com).
