Prebuild Kit Information

Prebuild kits containing Mini-Toobers (foam-covered wire) are now available through 3D Molecular Designs.

If you wish to purchase a prebuild kit, please visit the 3D Molecular Design website. Please note Mini-Toobers will be used during onsite competitions.

SO Students modeling onsite build

Each 2012 prebuild kit contains the following:

  • 2 Mini-toobers (286cm and 202cm)
  • Blue and Red Caps (to indicate amino and carboxy-termini)
  • 10 support posts

Teams will be constructing a model of bothChains A and B for the prebuild model.

Please Note!

The numbering in the PDB file 1i3o is not consecutive. In the field of caspase research, scientists number caspase proteins based on the numbering of caspase-1. Researchers can then compared the sequences between the members of the caspase family to look for insertions/deletions. To help you navigate your way through the unique numbering of this pdb file, we have generated a graphical represenation of the sequence for 1i3o. Please click here to see this image.

Alternative Materials

Teams may elect to use alternative materials for their prebuild model. Alternative suggestions for materials include (but not limited to the following):

  • 12 guage dimensional wire or KwikTwists for the mini-toober
  • electrical tape or small styrofoam balls colored appropriately for the endcaps
  • pipecleaners or twist ties for support posts

Please note that the purchase of mini-toober from 3D Molecular Designs helps to defray the cost of the onsite build materials used at the regional, state and national tournaments.
